Career Day Tips

UNLV Career Day is our annual campuswide career fair held each spring semester specifically for UNLV students and alumni. Employers nationwide attend this important event.

UNLV hosted 118 organizations (350+ recruiters) at Career Day 2009. Organizations represented included accounting firms, casinos, construction companies, financial institutions, engineering and technology, government agencies, hospitals, hotels, law enforcement, military, school districts, restaurants, retail outlets, and more (for the complete list of attending organizations see the "Career Day 2006 Recruiters" section in this handbook).

Career Day is ideal for graduating seniors looking for full-time employment, undergrads looking for internships and career-related experience, and alumni still looking for that perfect position. However, all students are encouraged to attend to network with Human Resources and corporate personnel - you can obtain career information, learn about current and future openings, and gather information critical to your job search.

The list of attending employers is published on the Career Services website months before the event, with links to the organizations' profiles and websites.

CAREER DAY SUCCESS CHECKLIST

Preparation:

  • Create or update your resume and have it critiqued by a Career Services professional Career Counselor (see our website for walk-in hours, or call 702-895-3495 for an appointment).
  • Make enough copies of your resume(s) so you can present one to each organization that interests you; keep in mind there may be last minute additions at the event.
  • Review the list of attending organizations on the Career Services website, and research those of interest.
  • Prepare questions to ask the organizations' representatives.
  • Check UNLV CareerLink for those attending employers also participating in On-Campus Recruiting in the spring semester; you may be able to sign up for an interview before the event.

At The Event:

  • Dress professionally.
  • Carry copies of your resume(s) and any materials you may need to reference.
  • Meet as many employer representatives as possible - don't waste this once-a-year opportunity; it's no time to be shy.
  • Hand your resume to representatives of the organizations for which you might like to work, and collect their business cards. Ask for referrals within the company if the representative knows of opportunities for your field of interest or geographic preference.
  • Ask company-specific questions and start building relationships that can lead to opportunities later.

Follow-Up:

  • Review the information you collected.
  • Provide any information requested of you during the event.
  • Contact representatives of the organizations that interest you. Contact information for organizations that attended Career Day is on file at Career Services.
  • If you signed up for an interview at the event or online, prepare for it.
  • Promptly accept or decline job or internship offers.
  • Upon accepting an offer, please do not continue to interview with other organizations.
